Slipping clutch

Ungelesener Beitragvon AlteSchwede » Montag 29. Juni 2015, 21:29

After close to 1000 km's in my "new" Wartburg the first real problem has occurred. The clutch/kupplung has started slipping. I checked for new parts on ebay but there seems to be at least two variations: 180/200 millimeter diameter. Does anyone know which diameter would fit my 1986 Wartburg?

Hello to Sweden!

The right diameter should be 180mm unless anybody else has changed it. One more important thing is that there are two types of clutch release bearings. If everything is in the original state you should have the new version of the clutch with the new type of realease bearing: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6006&p=65085&hilit=353+drucklager#p65085
This new version is called "Zentralgeführtes Drucklager"

Hope this helps, there will be some offers in the internet.

NB: The spline profile is exactly the same as Volskswagen Beetle

Thanks for the answer rally 311. Today my mailman delivered a new 180mm clutch so now it is just up to me to get the old one replaced. I have never removed a Wartburg motor before but it seems to be pretty straight forward when looking under the bonnet.

The only problem is the engine's weight. Removing a Trabant's engine is much more comfortable.

Good morning!

I agree, removing and installing the engine is not a big deal. Nevertheless you should know that there has to be a clearance of about 2cm at the clutch pedal, this is adjusted at the cable below the car. In addition there should be a small spring ouside at one of the bolts fitting the engine and gearbox, pulling back the clutch release handle.
As well it might be tricky to deaerate the coolant system afterwards. There are two deaeration srews, one on the thermostat housing and another one on the cabin heater. To get the air out of the system you should remove the pressure bottle and hold it above the cabin heater.

Let us know if it worked well, good luck: rallye311

The motor is now removed from the car and I had planned to replace the clutch disc today. Well, the disc looks okay. The problem is that the pressure plate/kupplungsautomat has cracked. I'll have to order another one and wait a few days until I can take my Wartburg for a ride again.

Thanks Stig. I found the part I need on German ebay, located in Bulgaria so now I hope the Bulgarian mailmen are quick

Got the part from Bulgaria today and put everything back together in the afternoon. My Wartburg is once again alive :D The bleeding nipple on the thermostat housing is so tiny. I thought I had broken it but to my big surprise it was supposed to be that short.
